The use of microchips is the best option to facilitate the search in case of lost animals.

What is the microchip?

It is a small electronic device, which is implanted inside the skin of pets, in this case cats. Each device contains a unique code of nine digits and four letters that identifies the associated animal.

This ID contains your family's contact information: address, phone numbers and names.

What is the microchip used for?

  • It is a legal recognition that the cat is part of the family, since it is associated with the family and contains the contact details of the person responsible for its care. This microchip cannot be replaced and therefore the data cannot be falsified, thus helping to avoid possible theft.

  • In addition, if a cat is lost and microchipped, the chances of it being returned to its home increase. Of course, it is important to keep the contact information up to date.

  • This identification also helps to avoid animal abandonment. The Organic Law 1/2015 includes in the Spanish Penal Code that the abandonment of pets is a crime. Therefore, if an animal has been abandoned and has the microchip implanted, it can be scanned and legal proceedings can be initiated for the abandonment of the animal.

In Spain, the identification of pets is mandatory, but the use of microchips is not mandatory.

Another alternative for animal identification would be a tag with the animal's name and contact number.

According to a study on the abandonment and adoption of pets, only 4.5% of the cats collected by the shelters have a microchip implanted.

From our association, we absolutely recommend the use of microchip since it is very effective for the identification of the animal.
